Sun Apr 08, 2007 1:58 am   And the heat mounts

As we all know, the Supreme Court found  ''that the election of the respondent to be a nullity and void on account of corrupt practice of bribery''. The respondent here being Ashok Jugnauth. The latter has decided to appeal to the Privy Council. What the Privy Council will decide, we do not know yet. If the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council upholds and confirms the decision of the Supreme Court, then we are heading towards a by-election in constituency no.8. Ashok Jugnauth announced on Friday 06 April that in the event of a by-election he will get the support of the MMM. The leader of the aforesaid party, Mr Berenger confirmed this news during a press conference on Saturday 07 April, and announced that the MMM will not propose any candidate in an eventual by-election.

So let's see what the configuration of this election might be.
The Social-Alliance has got one more party joining its side in the name of PMSD making it nothing but stronger. It is highly probable that it is Raj Ringadoo who will be the Alliance-Sociale candidate. I cannot see anyone else unless the leader of the Labour Party decides otherwise. If the Alliance-Sociale is defeated, it will not be the end of the world. By the time we reach the general elections in 2010, it would have re-built its health.

The Opposition is divided. The MMM and MSM are ripped. The MSM is further split with the Union Nationale(UN). Can we eventually see a united opposition comprising of MMM/MSM/UN? If that is a yes, then the population will have no other choice than to mock at it. I cannot see this happening but politics is politics.

The MMM said he will support Ashok Jugnauth. But, if the Privy Council confirms that Ashok Jugnauth is guilty of corruption, then can he, legally-morally speaking, be candidate again? Anyway, we know that some of our politicians have neither moral values nor self-respect, so let's admit that it will be Ashok Jugnauth himself who will be the candidate of an unofficial MMM-UN Alliance.  The MMM will prove once more that it is a party darkened with corruption for it to show support to a corrupted politician. (I am saying once more with reference to what they did with ECO when there was an enquiry on Jayen Cutarree).  If defeated, it will only mean that Ashok Jugnauth has no credibility, and that the MMM is no more a strong political force.

What about the MSM? Pravind Jugnauth has been yelling everywhere that the MSM is the strongest party of the country. Will the MSM dare to go alone now? If yes, then who will be the candidate? Pravind Jugnauth, being the leader of his party, and not being an MP, must seize this opportunity to present himself as the candidate. And if he is defeated, the MSM’s sun might not rise again.

This eventual by-election will be a difficult one especially in such a constituency where no one has a comfortable majority. Based on what they have achived so far, the Alliance-Sociale are without the shadow of a doubt the favourite to win this election. On the other hand, we shall see a chacha-neveux war under the eyes of papa president  la ! The heat is mounting.
